5 Self Esteem Activities Guaranteed to Boost Your Self-image
If I received just one dollar for every time I saw someone chasing an ideal self-image, I’d be a rich life coach. It seems strange to me that people often compare themselves with people they believe have it all figured out. Why is it strange? Because people more often than not don’t really know the truth behind the ‘ideal’ image they compare themselves to.
There are many ways even you could hurt your self-image by regularly comparing yourself to elusive perfection. Remember that what you see on TV is fantasy and what you see around you is usually incomplete. You don’t know the truth about anyone’s life experiences, skills, innate abilities, and the kind of influences he or she had. Are you fair to yourself whenever you say you don’t measure up to ‘them’?
In the end, what does it take to get it together, to become successful and confident, and to maintain a healthy self-image so that you never want to compare yourself to another person again? In my opinion, it takes more than one ingredient to create a healthy self-esteem recipe.
Here are 5 Self Esteem Activities Guaranteed to Improve Your Self-image
1. Stop comparing yourself
Stop comparing yourself with other people. You are unique, with your own strengths, weaknesses, and life experiences. Recognize and appreciate your individuality and originality and stop assigning some arbitrary hierarchy of worth to yourself based on your perception of another.
2. Know your values
What do you value most? Make a list of your top six values. Some examples are visionary, creative, arts, entrepreneurship, family, spirituality, philanthropy, etc… As you set your goals and aspirations – check them against your values. If the goal doesn’t align with any of your top six values – you may want to reconsider it or revise it. Start by asking yourself why you picked this goal and what benefit you hope to receive by achieving it. Then ask yourself “Am I chasing an ideal?”
3. Fulfill your needs
Unmet needs will keep you from living authentically. If you have an unacknowledged need: to be right, to be in control, to be loved, to be free, I highly recommend you take care of yourself. There are so many people who live their lives without realizing their dreams and most of them end up feeling stressed or even depressed for that matter. Make a list of your top six needs and remember that it’s your responsibility to fulfill them.
4. Honor your strengths
What are your positive traits? What special talents do you have? List three. If you get stuck, look back at your successes. What did it take to be successful? Were you imaginative, witty, or good with your hands? Find ways to express your authentic self through your strengths. You will improve your self-image when you share what you know with others.
5. Live authentically
Increase your awareness of your inner wisdom and express it. Embrace those attributes that you believe make you vulnerable; sensitive, introvert and empathetic, don’t be afraid to show the world your authenticity.
