This past April, at the end of a coaching cycle, meaning a group of clients are at the end of their 10-week life coaching program – I take a week to review client cases, finalize any new tools that I may have created along the way, and to brainstorm ideas.
Social media was on the list of goals – specifically Twitter. Even though I had a twitter account since 2008, I had no idea how to get followers, and better, how to keep them. From time-to-time if I tried hard enough I’d get a mention or two. But for the most part the stream of mentions sat empty for years until this past April.
Determined to get twitter working for me I dedicated an entire week over 90 hours – around the clock learning. I paid close attention to a few Tweeps who appeared influential. I learned a lot by observing them and by trying a few of my own ideas.
I know if I throw enough things against a wall something will eventually stick. So I started throwing ideas up on Twitter. That also means your ideas are live. Testing begins almost immediately. So if any of my followers back then were paying attention to my tweets they would have observed and probably got a chuckle at what I did.
But it didn’t take long before something did stick. As a matter of fact in just a few short weeks #AskTheCoach was born. I scrambled to learn how to host a successful twitterchat, it was a bit rocky at first. But within in few short weeks #AskTheCoach started getting attention and found its own format.
#AskTheCoach was born because I was looking for a forum to engage people in discussion about self-awareness and topical subjects. Before #AskTheCoach there were a few other ideas. One of them is #undoingthedoing– what was I thinking? Good thing I didn’t judge it back then because if I did there’s a good chance #AskTheCoach wouldn’t have been born.
