The first step to creating your own job is learning your strengths through self-awareness. The ability to stay self-aware transcends into sound judgment and the ability to identify and embrace personal and professional development. To learn your strengths requires introspection into many areas of your life. By nature, you are complex and diverse. To truly realize self-awareness and self-actualization, start by focusing on the following five areas.
1. Personality: While your personality does not generally change with self-awareness, knowing who you are aids in identifying jobs in which you are bound to thrive, as well as those that are more likely to cause stress or put up too many roadblocks you must overcome.
2. Values: Knowing what you value is vital to your ability to know your true Self. Sometimes you can lose focus on what matters when taking things day-to-day or moment-to-moment. By identifying those values that are central to your existence, you can keep them at the focus of everything you do.
3. Habits: Your habits can have both positive and negative impact on your path to self-awareness. Habits are behaviors that occur regularly, often subconsciously. With conscious awareness of your habits, you can identify those which serve to help in your quest and which impede progress.
4. Needs: Your behavior is driven by psychological needs. These needs include affection, esteem, belongingness, self-actualization, achievement, control and power. Your needs are one of the driving forces that fuels motivation. Whether they are met greatly influences your success or failure.
5. Emotions: Understanding your emotions, what triggers them and how they affect your behaviors and actions, allows you to exercise more control. When you are emotionally self-aware, you can identify what goes on inside yourself and control how you navigate the twists and turns on the road of life.
These key pieces to self-awareness are not each an island onto themselves; instead, they overlap, intertwine and mingle to exploit your strengths and give you the knowledge to cope with your weaknesses. Identifying what makes you tick gives you the power to use self-discovery to examine your life, grow more efficient and develop intuitive skills that are sure to serve you well as you create your own job.
