life coach joanneOur emotions are one of our most amazing gifts. They are our support system, our calls to action, the glue that connects us with those we care about, and they influence everything we do in our personal lives as well as our professional lives. They are present in our life at all moments and are so powerful whether we are aware of their power or not. When we are aware and in control of our emotions, we can take advantage of their power in a way that will benefit every area of our lives. We experience the following benefits:
  • We are able to think clearly.
  • More confidence in ourselves
  • Manage stress better
  • Easier to overcome challenges
  • Make better decisions
  • Will know when to set boundaries and limitations, as well and be able to maintain them.
  • Improve our communication
  • Predict behavior in ourselves and others.
However, when we are unaware, running away from or out of control of our emotions, we become confused, our self-esteem is hindered, we loose sight of who we really are, we become tired and often damage our relationships, as well as our career.
Most of us enjoy our feelings of happiness, appreciation, and love and will strive to attain and maintain these feelings. We may run away from or hide some of our “negative” feelings like anger, fear, and sadness. However, these supposed “negative” feelings do have upsides. They provide information about ourselves, signal warnings, support our healing, and can inspire determination and action.
Since all of our feelings are vital to our life and have so much power over us, I would recommend that we learn to embrace our feelings. When we can embrace all of our emotions, we can harness their power to create a life that we have dreamed of.
In order to embrace our emotions, we need to accept what our feelings “feel” like and learn what they are inspiring us to do or not to do. Here are is a simple exercise that will help you embrace your feelings, as well a to learn how to control how you react to your feelings:
  1. Become aware of what you are feeling. Take a deep breath and slow down. Look within yourself and identify what you are feeling.
  2. Discover where this feeling is in your body, whether it tingles, aches or shivers and how it vibrates within you.
  3. Now that you have identified and related to this feeling, allow this feeling to flow through you. Close your eyes and be comfortable with it.
  4. Ask yourself, “What does this feeling automatically encourage me to do?”
  5. If what you want to do is not appropriate nor healthy for you, then ask yourself for another solution that will benefit your life.
Embracing your feelings is the first step to taping into their power to transform your life.
